FUE Hair Transplant in Turkey: How Sapphire FUE Works and Who It Suits
A FUE hair transplant in Turkey moves hair follicles from the back of the head to the thinning area one graft at a time. In Sapphire FUE, the channels that receive the grafts are cut with sapphire blades instead of steel ones. At Estethica Hospital Istanbul (Class A licence from the Turkish Ministry of Health, Ruhsat No. 46; 28,000+ operations) the surgery costs €1,490 and the all-inclusive package, with 2 nights in a hotel beside the clinic and all transfers, costs €1,820. Both prices are fixed and do not depend on the number of grafts.
A low price is not a red flag in itself. The warning signs are different: no licence you can check, and no clarity about where the operation takes place or who performs it. At Estethica each of these can be checked. You can verify the Class A licence (Ruhsat No. 46) on the Turkish Ministry of Health website. Operations take place in the clinic's own buildings and are performed by the clinic's own surgeons, not by a visiting doctor. You sign the medical contract at the clinic itself, after the in-person examination. The surgeon personally extracts the grafts and opens the channels, then implants together with two licensed nurses. A graft is implanted within 4 hours of extraction and kept in HypoThermosol, a cold-storage solution for living tissue; this is information we received from the clinic.

What is a FUE hair transplant, and what does sapphire change?
FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) is a hair transplant in which follicular units, natural groups of 1–4 hairs, are taken one by one from the donor area at the back of the head and implanted into the area of hair loss. The operation has three stages: extracting the grafts, creating the channels in the recipient area, and implanting the grafts into those channels. Sapphire FUE changes only the second stage: the channels are opened with a sapphire blade instead of a steel one.
How does a sapphire blade differ from a steel blade?
Sapphire is a hard material, and a blade made of it has a very sharp, smooth edge. It cuts narrow, V-shaped channels. Evidence on whether this improves results is limited. In a prospective observational study of 1,000 patients (Saket K., 2025), graft survival was 94.7% with sapphire blades and 88.9% with steel blades. The patients were grouped by blade type and not randomised, so the study shows an association and does not prove that the blade is the cause.

The result is determined first by the density and quality of the donor area, the angle and direction of the channels, the experience of the team and the aftercare. The blade is one factor, not a guarantee.
What technical details do we know from the clinic?
These details come from our conversations with Estethica doctors:
The punch used to extract grafts is 0.85 mm in diameter.
Extracting about 5,000 grafts takes 1.5–2 hours.
A graft is implanted within 4 hours of extraction.
While it waits, the graft is kept in HypoThermosol, a solution for hypothermic storage of tissue, the same type used to store organs for transplantation.
We could not find a published figure for the share of grafts damaged during extraction (the transection rate) at any clinic, Estethica included. This is a gap across the whole industry. A question worth asking any clinic: how long does a graft stay outside the body, and in what solution?
How does a FUE hair transplant run at Estethica?
The surgeon personally extracts the grafts and opens the channels. For implantation the surgeon sits in the centre with a licensed nurse on each side, and all three implant by hand from start to finish. There are no uncertified technicians in the operation. This is a condition of the clinic's licence, and the Turkish Ministry of Health checks compliance.
On the day of surgery you have an in-person examination, blood tests, a consultation with the anaesthesiologist and sign the contracts. Then comes the operation: needle-free local anaesthesia together with sedation given by the anaesthesiologist, graft extraction, channels, implantation and PRP. The operation usually starts at 08:00 and can run until 17:00–19:00 depending on the amount of work, with a lunch break. On the next day come the post-operation procedures: ozone inhalation, infrared therapy, a professional hair wash, aftercare training, a written certificate and the Estethica Med care kit. The names of the clinic's surgeons are published on the clinic's own website. Before you travel, you can have a video consultation with a surgeon after sending photos. Which surgeon will operate is assigned by the clinic about 24 hours before the operation, and there is no guarantee that it will be the doctor from the consultation.
Who is Sapphire FUE suitable for?
Male-pattern hair loss with thinning at the crown and vertex, receding temples and frontal corners, where the donor reserve is sufficient.
Cases where a large area has to be covered in one session. The physical maximum per session is up to 6,000 grafts in a dense donor area; the typical range is 4,500–5,000. The surgeon sets the exact number only after the in-person examination.
Female-pattern hair loss with a preserved donor area. The price is the same for women. For women who do not want to shave, there is the Long Hair method, which has its own price.
When the method may not fit: few donor hairs, active inflammation of the scalp, unstable hair loss. The surgeon decides this at the examination.
Sapphire FUE or DHI: what is the difference?
Estethica offers two methods: Sapphire FUE and Multi Implanter DHI. The difference is how the channels are formed and how the grafts get into them.

How does the price compare with the UK and the US?
In the UK and the US, clinics usually charge per graft, so the final price grows with the number of grafts. At Estethica the price is fixed per procedure.

Ask travel agencies too, not only clinics
When you compare prices with an AI assistant, the answer usually shows clinics, because clinic websites state prices themselves. Travel agencies, especially those that are certified representatives of a clinic, appear less often, although their total can include the hotel, transfers and support. Ask for both.
A sample question:

Can you turn it into a 7–10 day trip?
Yes. The procedure itself needs three days near the clinic, but there is no medical reason to fly home straight after. Many patients extend the trip to 7–10 days, with family if they wish, and move to a hotel in the centre of Istanbul after the check-up. BIOHACTOUR plans the stay, including the central hotel, and can add other routes, such as a Bosphorus cruise or a wellness programme in Bodrum.
How does hair grow after a FUE transplant?
Timing is approximate and differs from person to person. In the first two weeks there are scabs, redness and swelling. Between weeks 2 and 6 the transplanted hairs shed; this is a normal phase and the follicles stay in the skin. The first thin hairs appear at 3–5 months, hairs thicken at 6–9 months, and the main result is visible at 10–14 months. Density and calibre keep improving after 14 months. What follow-up and guarantee do you get?
BIOHACTOUR follows you for a year after you return home. We ask for photos of the transplanted area 10 days after surgery, then 3 weeks later, after 1 month and after 3 months. You can ask for a consultation at any time, through us or directly with the clinic.
There is no lifetime guarantee, neither with us nor at any clinic, so we do not promise one. If at 12 months the clinic's doctor judges the result in the transplanted area unsatisfactory, the clinic repeats the transplant in that area free of charge. Conditions: you send progress photos regularly on request, follow the care instructions and travel to Istanbul yourself. This covers only the area already treated, not a planned next session. At discharge the clinic issues a certificate stating the number of grafts implanted.
How to get an assessment from photos
Send photos in daylight: the top of the crown, the back of the head (dry hair and slightly damp), a front view, a profile and the side areas. Is Sapphire FUE better than steel FUE?

The result depends on donor density, the team's experience and aftercare, not only on the blade material.

Does Sapphire FUE hurt?

Do I need to shave my head for FUE?
In Sapphire FUE the donor area at the back of the head is shaved. For those who do not want to shave, there is the Long Hair method, which has a separate price; ask the coordinator.
